It was quite an eye-opener, basically the nature of this competition was something like a pagent. However, apart from this competition, what surprised me was that there were many musical performances on show~~, some of the special guests invited included Nicky ( Vietnam Idol 2008 Top 20 Contestant ) and Thuy, who has won numerous singing competitions before.
Performance highlights
I didn't really get their videos down but my first impression of these singers was that, they really had an international standard in their singing. Most of the songs sang were Vietnamese pop music, but there was a huge variety of pop genres. Just shows how diverse the music industry in Vietnam has developed into. On show were english songs, Jazz numbers, ballets, and so on...
What was so special about this concert was that I got to perform in it! , I sang the song "When You Say Nothing at All" and it was indeed quite well received by the audience~~!. After singing, I received 3 big bouquets of flowers! There were even people who wanted to take a picture with me, to my surprise!, which I felt very thankful for.
The reasons I think I was quite well received was that no 1 I was a foreigner, and no 2, I was singing a foreign song in "natural" English accent. Again, Vietnam was indeed open its doors to foreign receptivity, and Vietnamese music has indeed been moving the right direction. Also, as this is a University, I would say that the youth in Vietnam, or the new generation are catching up on new trends and definitions in the music industry today, with hybridism and foreign influences.
