I got invited from Jia Lun, my friend from Taiwan, to sing at her school's teacher's day concert with her, at Đại Học Kinh Doanh, or Hanoi Tech and Business University. We did a Chinese number, called "Qing Fei De Yi" Or "Loving you is not my will". It was rather pleasant, again we were quite well received by the audience~! and yea, we got flowers! by the way my friend is one of the Chinese teacher's in the school.
Vietnamese youths especially can be seen to be very involved with the popular culture of music, or music performances. Many other student singers also took turns to sing songs, which comprised of Chinese, English and Vietnamese songs!, mainly because the school teachers Chinese.
Anyway, what was the most striking thing in this event was , a Michael Jackson dance item, thus, the changing of social spaces in music to accommodate foreign influence, which is especially appealing to the youths. After that was a rock band that came to the stage. At first it seemed quite normal, the atmosphere was quite good. But as he continued to sing the 2nd and 3rd songs, which were Vietnamese but were very hard rock, the atmosphere changed drastically! people started jumping and throwing water around the place, even going up on stage to dance with the band. Never have I experienced something so energetic and enthusiastic. Further more, this was a school concert! the place not many people would expect it to happen.
What I noticed was that the lead singer of the band was wearing this Kurt Cobaine shirt, who was the singer for rock band "Nirvana" in America in the past. Thus, Vietnamese youths especially, have indeed moved on and adopted and accepted new kinds of music from the West, in this case the genre of rock, that has had a huge influence in Vietnam, judging from this band, and the fact that the audience knew the songs he sang so well, singing along when he handed his microphone to the crowd. It was really an unbelievable experience. It makes you wonder how fast Vietnamese people have adapted to foreign influences, especially in the area of music, in this case, rock music. Enjoy the video presentation and check it out for yourself!
Cheers,
Daniel Foo
